The York River Oyster Revolution

  • 6504 Main Street Gloucester, VA, 23061 United States (map)

Dr. Martin Gallivan will present archaeological research on 1,400 years of Native settlement along the lower York River. Beginning around AD 200, Indigenous communities pioneered oyster fishery management and founded permanent villages long before agriculture. His talk highlights their sustainable practices and enduring lessons in environmental stewardship.

This program is made possible through the partnership of the Gloucester Historical Society, Gloucester 250 Committee, and the Gloucester Museum of History.
