The Life & Science of John Clayton: Virginia's First Flora

  • The Historic Edge Hill House 6805 Main Street Gloucester, VA, 23061 United States (map)

In this engaging first-person presentation, Richard Cheatham becomes John Clayton, the 18th-century scientist whose work produced Virginia’s first and only Flora for more than 250 years. Clayton recounts his life's passion, his adventures into the wilderness, his scientific achievements, and friendships with leading minds of the Enlightenment, including Benjamin Franklin and Carl Linnaeus. The result is a colorful, entertaining, and enlightening encounter with one of America’s most important—and least known—early scientists.
