Homeschool Dig Day with Fairfield

  • Fairfield Archeology Park 5777 Fairfield Lane Hayes, VA, 23072 United States (map)

Homeschool families looking for a hands-on way to learn about history and archaeology are invited to kick off Fairfield Foundation’s 2026 Homeschool Days with a special Dig Day on Tuesday, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day) at Fairfield Archaeology Park from 10am-2pm.

This immersive, outdoor program gives students the opportunity to dig alongside professional archaeologists, explore real artifacts, and learn how excavations help us uncover the stories of people who lived in Gloucester centuries ago. As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of American Independence, this year’s homeschool programs will focus on Gloucester and Virginia’s role in the early formation of the United States.

Students will step into the shoes of archaeologists, learning how artifacts found in the ground, from everyday objects to fragments of the building, allow us to better understand the lives, labor, and experiences of earlier generations. In addition to excavation activities, participants will enjoy hands-on educational stations and a festive St. Patrick’s Day twist, including learning about all things green found at Fairfield.

Families are encouraged to pack lunch and enjoy a full day outdoors at the park. This program blends history, science, and discovery, making it ideal for curious homeschool learners and kids who love getting their hands dirty.

And of course, don’t forget to wear green!
